Our Philosophy

Melissa, do you have a guiding philosophy at Fundación Corazón de Niña, a way of being in the world you might say, that you endeavour to pass on to your boys and girls?

Our responsibility to each and every Corazon child is to provide a secure home in which they are appreciated and loved for who they are, and supported to be all they can be. I believe our job, like the job of every good parent, is to provide an environment in which a child can grow  with security, love,  values and  knowledge to become a healthy, confident, self-reliant person and thus break the cycle of poverty and abuse.

That is our philosophy — a steadfast belief that security, love, values and knowledge  are essential to the development of a well-balanced adult.

What do you mean by those words — security, love, values and knowledge?

Security

The moment each boy or girl arrives, we tell her that Fundación Corazón de Niña is his home forever if he so chooses, that we will always be there for him and that he is welcome to stay until he is ready to begin a life of his own making.

But security means more than a place to stay. It means creature comforts — food on the table, a cosy bed, things of one’s own, a shower,  clean clothes, brushed teeth and brushed hair tied with a ribbon. And it means protection from harm and stable, life-long, loving relationships.

Love is the cornerstone of Fundación Corazón de Niña. Love is unconditional and permeates all that we are and all that we do here.

Love

Love is the cornerstone of Fundación Corazón de Niña. Love is unconditional and permeates all that we are and all that we do here. There are no pointed fingers  at Corazón, no punishment, no judgment, no raised voices. We listen, we counsel, we teach by example,  we offer a gentle and guiding hand and we encourage the children to lead a spiritual life.

Values

Infusing our girls and boys with  values is so important at Fundación Corazón de Niña. Strong values will keep them safe, help them  to form mutually supportive relationships and give them the confidence to realize their full potential. In the best of possible outcomes, our hope is that Corazón children will become fully realized men and women, men and women of substance, beacons who will bring light and well-being to the lives of those around them.

Strong values will keep [the boys and girls] safe, help them  to form mutually supportive relationships and give them the confidence to realize their full potential.

Knowledge

At Corazón  we are well aware that education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty and dysfunction by ensuring our children receive the education and training essential for life-long economic security.

To that end we enroll them in a good school, provide for post-secondary education and encourage curiosity, wonder and learning at every opportunity. We believe that through knowledge comes strength, purpose, security and joy in living.

So these four essentials for a well-raised child — security, love, values and education — are really the four corner-posts of Fundación Corazón de Niña. Each is essential to the integrity of the child and to the integrity of our home.

So these four essentials for a well-raised child — security, love, values and education — are really the four corner-posts of Fundación Corazón de Niña. Each one is essential to the integrity of the child and to the integrity of our home. If one falters, the whole is placed in jeopardy. Each requires the other three to function. Can a home offer security if it lacks love, values and knowledge?  Can values be taught where security, love and knowledge are tenuous? No,  for the whole to function well, for the child to prosper, each of these four elements — security, love, values and education must be present and robust.

  1. I feel blessed to have encountered Melissa and Juan when I attended the tour and breakfast. I witnessed their loving dedication and thoughtful, caring relationship with the children and each other.

They are indeed trying to give the children a loving, secure, safe home and a good education by their resourceful fund-raising and GEM program. The older children help the younger ones and they all work together for the good of their “family”.

The atmosphere is peaceful with a gentle and loving feeling evident in the children and Juan and Melissa. I am delighted to be involved in supporting Corazon de Nina. The first time I attended the breakfast, I felt like I was talking with another Mother Theresa when I spoke one on one with Melissa. She took a leap of faith when she accepted the responsibility for the first 13 girls who asked to live with her. Besides her motherly ways, Melissa brings a business mindset to fund-raising to support her huge family of needy children. Melissa and Juan work side by side using their individual talents to provide for their forever family. Juan has done a remarkable job of building and expanding the living space to accommodate their beautiful family. They are an amazing couple with hearts overflowing with love.

May God bless their efforts with financial support and volunteers to help them meet their goals.
